Charles W. Smith
Texas Artist, Charles W. Smith, is a 4th generation Texan, raised in the small, South Texas town of Tuleta, halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Like most artists, he started drawing as a child and continued into early adulthood. Charles was inspired to begin painting after seeing the beautiful prints by his early artist hero, Dalhart Windberg, in a shop in the mall, in Victoria, TX, so he purchased a few “how to paint” books, and thus began his artistic journey. Charles’ painting was put on hold for a few years, while he served in the US Army and then attended college at Texas A&M University - Kingsville, but he kept his feet in the proverbial artistic waters by doing landscape photography. While in the Army, Charles travelled extensively throughout Europe, the Balkans and Scandinavia, witnessing and photographing the profound natural beauty of each country that he visited. After leaving the Army, Charles had the opportunity to travel throughout most of the lower 48 states in the US, as well. While travelling through some of the most beautiful places in the world was truly breathtaking, and the memories of those awe-inspiring views are always there for inspiration, Charles has a passion for capturing, on canvas, the feeling of experiencing the beauty of those often overlooked places, such as small, local parks and natural areas. Charles grew up loving all of the photographs and paintings of sweeping vistas, rocky coasts and snow-capped mountains that we have all seen, but he feels that the beautiful, lesser known places, in small towns and rural areas across the country, have stories that deserve to be told as well.
